    Cab,

    The flat sided carpenter pencil slides into a slot that is actually a rotating disk. The slotted rotating disk keeps the pencil aligned for sharpening as it "rotates." The sharpener is about 3/4 to 7/8 inch in diameter, or at least the rotating disk that holds the pencil is that size.

    Loring pointed out a problem with some - they don't sharpen to a "point". However, it looks like this one at LeeValley will sharpen in the manner that Loring likes. Not sure completely but it looks like it may sharpen to a point:

      I ran across this handy pencil sharpener that has an erasable writing pad. BTW...its a tape measure too.
