Not sure if I asked here, or anywhere else for that matter, about my drill press problem, but here goes the story...
A few months ago, when cutting over aggressively with my biggest forstner bit, I managed to slip the chuck on the taper and had the whole shebang come apart. I tried reinstalling the chuck and always got a wobble / runout, so I had to fix it. Here's what I did, and what I found...
#1. The nut that holds the upper pulley to the shaft had worked its way loose. Now I have no idea if this actually contributed to the runout, but it wasn't right, so I dabbed a touch of loctite blue on it and ran the nut back down tight.
#2. There was some sort of nasty, gunky filth inside the bore of the chuck, and on the taper. Quality time with automotive brake parts cleaner a series of rags, and a NEW brass bristled bottle type brush to scrub the bore clean. I cleaned this sucker to within and inch of its life. Nearly emptied a full can of brake parts cleaner into it while watching a trail of black goo and chunks of stuff come out. I have to assume that the gunk was whatever lube was in there before, and the particlate had to be wood dust / shavings and even metal shavings from its prior life doing automotive type work for the prior owner...
Now the taper, and everything in the chuck was perfectly clean and free of any debris that could cause the chuck to sit off center against the shaft...
But it's dry as a bone, and needs some lube... Now I don't know if what I used was right, but I opted for CRC PTFE dry lube. It's what I had on hand.
Next I fully retracted the jaws on the chuck, and pressed the chuck using the typical routine (raise the table enough to get a chunk of 4x4 under the chuck, lock it in place, then lower the chuck strongly, several times until it seats...
Chuck a known good drill bit as a measuring point to the chuck and check for runout. My dial indicator does not show any now...
Count me as a happy camper!
