Lee Valley goes - um, modern?

I am not sure I like this sort of 'progress' - does anybody really generate so much dust while planing?

But then, buying one of their planes would be expense enough for me, let alone the Festool dust extractor!

Well, I guess. I think sweeping the shavings up can be just as cathartic as making them.

I'll get a lot of fine dust off of oak. Wonder if it will fit my Stanley Baily no. 8?

The No-Fuss-Tool line from Veritas... It's "Quicker, Simpler, Cleverer".
The no preening part should speed up work, but it wil take out some of the fun.

                A GOOD one!

Now, I would have taken it as true if it was from Rockler, but from Lee-Valley I was having some doubts; but hey, if it were true I think there would be an untold number for buyers standing in line.

While the "dust" thing sort of stirs me to keeping ahead of it in the shop, there is just something about shavings/curls that's quite appealing. I keep my shop clean, but I question whether I'd ever want it to be sterile from all forms of so-called waste.

If you have to deal with woods that you have allergies to something like this might actually make sense... and if the vacuum is strong enough, and you drill a few teeny holes in the plane sole, it'll help suck the plane to the workpiece saving you a little muscle.

Next up: to reduce handplane-to-workpiece friction: replacing the sole of the plane with microscopic roller balls.

Check out the guy on the john working his wood at the bottom of the advertisement.

What I've loved about LV's AFD offerings are that they seem to actually create one piece of whatever they are advertising : or go to great lengths pulling the wool over our eyes. That effort just for a prank is commendable.

YES! Was just commenting to SWMBO about that and what it says about a company willing to prototype a unit. The video for the pocket dovetailer was well done.

I agree. The dust attachment for a hand plane video appeared to show the shavings getting sucked away very effectively. Part of the brilliance in their AFD products is that you could actually believe if someone manufactured something similar.

From the More Info Link on the Lee Valley website:

                            GOTCHA!
This is number nine in our ongoing series of April 1st products. If you're interested in having a look at the previous eight, just search for "AFD" using the Item Search function on our website. While the Lee Valley Precision Story Tape is the only product that's actually available for purchase, each of the products depicted have actually been manufactured by Veritas®. Not only do they exist, they function exactly as we say: the tool belt really holds more than 500 pounds, the gang saw mechanism really functions as shown, and the trigger in the plane handle supplied with the No-Fuss Tool Shroud really does control the dust extractor, and so on. That's part of the fun – the tools have to be credible, and to be credible they have to work.
                            Have a happy April 1st!

                            Cheers,

                            The staff at Veritas® Tools
