Good deal on Delta Shopmaster TP400LS?

I was passing through a local hardware store and saw a Delta Shopmaster 12-1/2" planer with stand for $99.98. To me, that says it is old and poor quality. After many searches, I couldn't find any bad reviews on the machine. I am in the market for a planer but I was thinking of purchasing the DeWalt 735 or the Steel City 13" helical head planer.
Would it be a good idea to make the Delta purchase at $100 or pass it up and save for the larger planer?
    Thanks for any information.

I've had the Delta 22-560 for approximately 8 years now. The one you are looking at is its replacement. I've never had any problems with mine and have planed a lot of hardwood with it. For $100, I would be a buyer although I'm sure the other machines would be great too (and much more expensive).

Thanks, that helps. I am just really flattening already milled lumber to final dimension since I can't get rough sawn lumber anywhere that I know of. The Dewalt 735 would be my ultimate preference but I may just jump on this deal, if it still around in a couple of days.

        I like my 22-560 a lot. $100 is a darn nice price.

Is it better or equal, though? The Ryobi AP1301, as an example, was a downgrade from the 1300.

I don't have an opinion on either one, but wanted to state that replacements aren't always better.

            planer

Where are you? I might drive to that store?
How much do the knives cost to replace. I got the knives for my 22-540 for 21.00 but most cost up to 50.00. It seems that the older the machine is, the cost goes up.
A cost of 100.00 is a GREAT cost.

Thats a good basic machine. Cutterhead locks and nice planing.
              $100 is a bargain.

I agree with the others. For that money it's a good deal. You could likely sell it for that or more later.

Agreed, Buy it ,use it, keep it as a spare after getting another or resell at a higher price (possible) to augment the purchase of another better rated unit. It's all in how well it works for you tho. If it suits your needs then you have your answer.

That's what I was thinking. I see most planers resell on CL for $120-350. I think I'll go for it. I have been looking for a deal for over a year now.
This month has proven to be good for me so far. I picked up the Porter Cable 557 Biscuit Joiner for $76 at The Home Depot last week. That was a no brainer for me. Thanks, All.

I agree with your statement and was in a hurry or would have explained further. It is my understanding that this is essentially the same machine with a different label. It has the cutterhead lock like the 22-560. It has two knives that cannot be resharpened but can be turned on indexing pins like the 22-560. It has the same size motor as the 22-560. There are a few cosmetic changes but the stats are the same from what I have read.

The last time I bought knives at Lowes, they were $29.99 for the 22-560 but I don't think Lowes carries them anymore.
EDIT: It appears they're about $35 on Amazon now.

the Delta 22-560 is the same as the TP400LS except for labeling and having a stand.
When Delta rearranged its product line the 22-540 and 22-560 were made into the Shopmaster line carrying the labels TP-305 and TP400. LS designates a leg stand. Shopmaster was supposed to be a lesser line and the other stuff more industrial.
