If you could attach another identical setup (caliper, clamps, etc.) on the other leg of the sawblade, wouldn't it stretch the same .001"?

Or at any other point on the blade?

The tension in the band will be the same throughout the band (if there's no significant friction drag in the wheels)

So measuring an identical distance (5") on the opposite side would stretch the same amount. But usually the vertical support beam is in the way.
