While you're in there, and decide to clean things out, keep the "O" rings away from solvents like lacquer thinner and acetone.

      just the footnote,
ordered and got the replacement part (head valve). It was made of a different plastic, judging from the different color (old one black, new one white). With shipping and tax it was about $15.
No apparent o-ring damage. They were smooth and no nicks or tears.
Just cleared out the debris from the old one and regreased the o-rings. Works.

when i opened the nailers assy there was no tension on the four screws that held the head on. The head spring exerts a constant tension on the center of the head valve, of which the center portion had failed apparently from age and use and it simply separated into two pieces. When rebuilt the head valve was under tension again and the screws holding the head cap on were compressing the spring for the last 1/4" of travel. When i was taking it apart at first i wondered why there was so much engagement of the threads!

So now I have two working 2" 18 ga brad nailers. Three if you count a 1.25" 18 ga. Bostitch.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.
