Anybody see this? HF dust separator lid

I was looking over the HF site last night for things to use my 20% coupon on, and I saw this. I know I CAN make my own lid, but for $19.99 regular price, it would cost me more in my time to build it than buy this one.

I was at my local store today, and I asked if they had it in stock. They didn't - the lady told me it was likely internet only.

on phil thein's ste, there are examples of separator lids like that which have been fitted with his baffle. the baffle dramatically improves the performance of lids like the HF.
there's a solution to every problem.......you just have to be willing to find it.

I have the model for a 5gal bucket that I picked up at HF on a whim for about $5. It sat unused for a couple of years before I decided to give it a try. To be honest, I was quite impressed with how effective it was considering the cost.

I got that same model from Woodcraft a while back for use with my shop vac. If you have a really strong vac you would want to add a relief valve or something. I imploded a $30 trashcan in just a matter of seconds when I dropped my hose and it sucked up against a floor mat.

Read a bit more into Phil's site and the idea behind his lid and baffle design. Phil's lid is one of the fiew where the inlet to the vac / DC is in the center of the lid instead of opposite side from the hose end. This allows the baffle to do its job to the maximum extent possible.

Yeah the HF lid is better than nothing, but the scrubbing problems those lids have make them more of a headache than they are worth to me anyway... I would dig out some MDF of ply from the shop and build a Thien lid / baffle...

Well, right now I have no dust collection at all. My Shop Vac has the stupid 1-1/2" hose that won't connect to anything even with an adapter. I'm about to buy the HF 2hp DC with my $139.99 coupon, and I thought it plus a trash can separator with this lid would be light years ahead of what I've got now.

By the way, DBHost, can you give a little more detail on the "scrubbing problems" caused by these lids? Thanks.

First of all, check out Phil's page on his separator lid / baffle design. http://www.cgallery.com/jpthien/cy.htm

Scrubbing is the tendency of separators to after filling the vessel to a certain point, usually far below the full point, to simply recirculate the debris back into the air stream, and advancing it to the filters, which pretty much makes the separator lid all but pointless...

I wrote a fairly comprehensive post on Phil's forum on how to build one of his separator lids / baffles. It must have been good enough because Phil made it a sticky...
