I've windowed-in my Mom's back porch, replacing screens with white vinyl-framed sliding glass doors, with matching vinyl-framed transom windows overhead. To trim this out, I was thinking of using matching 1x4 white vinyl trim boards from HD, with 1/2" quarter-round covering the inevitable little gaps. While the vinyl trim is about 3 times as expensive as wood, I'd not have to deal with taping, priming, painting, and cleanup.
These 1x4s have square corners that I want to round over where they are visible. Given the cost of these boards (about $18 for 8'), I don't want to screw up. I can think of two likely approaches. (1) A round-over bit in my router. Perhaps 1/8". Without decent bench, clamps, etc., I worry about doing a clean job with this method. (2) A manual cornering tool that looks like a two-ended spoon with slots cut in the bottoms of the spoon bowls. Here, I don't know how well these cutters work on dense vinyl. I'd have to buy a bit or the cutters; bit about $25, cutters less than $15.
Anyone used either of these methods on this kind of trim material? How'd it work for you? Any suggestions on proper use?
