Impossible to tell types from the photos but both bench planes look to be in good overall condition. The tote, handle and Japanning look to be intact on both.

With a quick cleaning and honing the 60 1/2 should be ready to go to work!

      Good find!

Canada? Can't remember seeing one made in Canada. I thought they were made in Connecticut until they moved mfg to England.

I've seen a few refrences to some "Made in Canada" planes, but it's never been much though.

I just found some info here: http://forum.canadianwoodworking.com...ad.php?t=22452

Hmmm, I guess I'll have to be very careful when I pull these apart. I'll be sure to get as much forensic evidence as I can.

I tore into the No. 4 and No. 5 today. It appears the No. 4 was made in the early 50s and the no. 5 in the 30s. The No. 5 has the "sweethart" logo on the iron, which would nominally place it in the early 30s, but everything else makes it look like late 30s.

I'll post pics in a day or so. The electolysis is going very well for a first timer. That's a sweet method for cleaning iron and is very easy to do.

Although these planes were dirty they appear to have been used by someone who knew what he was doing. I hope I can make good users out of them.

Hey JR, can you elaborate on the electrolysis process you are using? Any links/photos for explanation? Thanks!

ctxman, sorry no pics, but here is a link that should serve you well. https://home.comcast.net/~rexmill/pl...ectrolysis.htm

Check out pappy's signature line for a link to his web shots. Also try a search for "electrolysis hand plane".

I used a little plastic tub and Ph+ from my spa kit as the electrolyte. A piece of rebar found in the garden shed was attached to the positive lead on my battery charger. I found some solid wire in my junk box and connected a couple/few pieces to the negative lead. Power on for 2-3 hours and BINGO. A few minutes with brass brush and a rag, and all is well. The japaning didn't even come off.

                          HTH,
