Mounting jig for a belt sander?

Before getting my dedicated belt sander (shopsmith) I would simply clamp my handheld in my wood-vise. No table, but I still managed to make it fairly useful.

Here's the fixture disassembled. The clamp is a piece of 5//8" plywood with holes on the back edge to match the 1/4" bolts epoxied into the back (vertical) piece.
I glued a piece of 1/4"thick felt along the front of the clamp where it meets the sander. I made the back piece about 1/8" more narrow than the width of the sander to insure firm clamping.
The sander is supported by the clamp, the back piece, and the side piece (with openings as necessary to clear protrusions on the sander).

I like your Fence, much simpler idea than I had in mind.

Mine's a little different shape than yours, so I going to build a pocket for the tail and use a U-Bolt to hold the knob in place. It has a flat nose forward of the knob, so a raised piece here should prevent any rocking.

Off to Lee Valley tomorrow to buy some threaded knobs; the ones I have are the wrong thread.

LOL, it's better than it used to be. I used to buy most of my stuff in the US and save about 50%. But when the dollar hit parity, people clued in that they were getting screwed, since the prices were so much different when the exchange was very similar. Of course retailers started whining about FIFO (probably true), but had to start eating the difference anyway. It's still hard to get deals on more esoteric items. The Dewalt sander I wanted was $229 US and about $319 here (on sale) at the one place I could find it. When I bought my hammer drill a couple of years back, I saved about $400 even with shipping, etc.

UPS is a big problem too, you can really get screwed on the brokerage unless you ship expedited or use USPS.

I want to use it ootdoors and mounted vertically (hence the bungee to a post joke ). Jack's jig looks promising.

Kinda disappointed at 3" though, wish I'd bought the 4" for the tied down version. But I understand they're hard to handle freehand. Couldn't be any worse than the 16" floor sander.
