    Air filter success

After putting it off for a long time, last weekend I made an airfilter, simple box with a huge freebie squirrel cage fan, and 2 filters on each side. Tonight I had to use my drum sander for quite a bit of sanding, and having no DC yet, the air in the shop was very visible, so I turned on the airfilter for 30 minutes and left. When I got back the air was cleaner than before I started making dust, and I could smell the sweet clear fragrance of success!

Why didn't I do it long ago...

Sweet deal. I would STRONGLY urge that you use at the very least a shop vac with a HEPA filter and a Thien Cyclone to collect dust at the source along with that air filter rig. Your lungs will thank you for it!

if "the air in the shop was very visible" then I think at least you should wear respirator or build a seperator for your shop vac as dbhost suggest.
Now where are the pictures ?

Where did you get the timer?

Charlie, how well does the box fan work? I am thinking that I will make 1 or 2 of those to be my air cleaner. Also, where did you hang yours? I was intending that they both would be at one end of the shop but it might be more effective to have them towards the middle.

I have used the box fan type, and it works okay, but the filter sure cuts down on the CFM. If I were you I'd make a single unit using an old furnace blower.

After Charlie's I don't think I'm going to post pics after all. Nice job Charlie.

No, the air wasn't too visible under normal circumstances, but after using the drum sander, without a DC, yes.

And I need to work on a separator for the shopvac in the mean time. So far, where I needed reducers from 4" to 2.5", I've just made them, but didt' get to one for the drum sander yet. All priorities. Did someone say project list?

I'm actually eyeing the HF DC with one of the magazine coupons, maybe before Christmas.

Wow, actually a pretty good idea. I bet is smells great. I know this thread is old but I posted my question before and no one replied to me. I am looking for a furnace air filter. My husband and I are newlyweds and we just bought a house. We know nothing about our furnace, except that we need new air filters! Does anyone have any suggestions of brands or types that we should be aware of? I saw something about a website called discount filters and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with purchasing from them. Any reviews or advice would help. Thanks! Please answer this time!

Not terribly familiar with Discount Filter, but I have seen some folks talk about them. They seem okay...

I can recommend for a filter the 3M Filtrete Ultimate Allergen filters. They are kind of spendy at about $16.00 each, and considering my house takes 2, and I replace them every 3 months, it adds up. But with 4 pets in the house, we need all the filtration we can get!

You replied to someone that only has two posts, and both of them are linking to the above site. This is an OLD thread, they didn't start one (getting around the moderation?), and their posts, make me suspect a spammer is slipping in.
