What Is The Most Useful Tool You Own?

Not the one you use the most, but the one that is most versatile or comes through in sticky situations. I was thinking about this today and am thinking for me it is a flat blade screw driver. It is the one tool other than my util knife that I always have in my tool belt. Of course it can unscrew screws but it also opens and closes paint cans, can be a pry bar (in a pinch) can unscrew a stuck oil filter.

I thought about it, and I vote for the flat blade screwdriver too.

I don't know if this counts but I have a US military pocket knife with a stout bade, a combo straight screwdriver/ bottle-opener (about an un-necessary 'tool', now) and an awl with the the core machined out and the one edge sharpened. I got this from my BIL back in the late 60's and it's the forerunner of the mult-tool (like the huge Scout knives) so, I don't know if this counts as a true, tool (singular). At any rate, it has been in my pocket nearly every day and has become a little loose - deservadly so.
      Blessings,
      Chiz

At first I was going with hammer, but before I opened the post I had changed to flat blade screwdriver. I can use a rock for a hammer but it is hard to substitute for the screwdriver.

Bottle opener / corkscrew combination tool. It's really the only thing that works well in certain situations.

I think I'll go use it again now.

another vote for the screwdriver, but I like the kind where you can swap out differnt bit sizes.

I vote for my multi bit screwdriver. Although I have screwdrivers for almost everything, I always reach for my orange multi. And in a pinch I pull the bits and chuck them in my drill or even fit them in a ratchet driver.

...and I thought I was the only person who ever took off a stubborn oil filter by stabbing it!

3lb dead blow hammer. For a device whose only purpose is to hit stuff, it is surprisingly versatile, I use it to hit all kinds of stuff. Usually I hit stuff that's stuck, so it gets me out of sticky situations.

Today it tweaked a ramp that was crooked, but couldn't just be moved because my truck tire was leaning on it. Then it smacked the end of a ratchet to loosen the oil pan plug (I must have overtightened it last time).

On my last project I used it to tweak a face frame that wasn't square, and to flatten a cabinet wall that somehow got bowed.

I'll be back out in the shop tomorrow and I'm sure my 3lb dead blow will save me again.

Ball-pien hammer... It's an opener, closer, builder, wrecker, flattener, bender, persuader, waker-upper, putter to sleeper, paperweight, and I'm sure a few other things I can't think of right now...

My trusty Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. How else do I get the lumber to turn into toothpicks. In it I have delivered my BS, TS, joiner, planer and dozens of hand and small power tools. And it carries groceries as well.

I had to think about it for awhile but my most useful tool is a Surefire 6p lithium flashlight. I carry it in a holder on my belt and find I am reaching for it all the time. Lighting up the car keyhole in a dark parking lot, hitting a project with the bright light it puts out to spot flaws, finding my way around during power failures, taking the garbage out to the alley after dark, locating that screw or nut I dropped that rolled under the work bench and on and on. I find I use it constantly.
