For that amount of shingles, if I didn't have a gun, I wouldn't buy one. Even if you never did shingling, you should be able to finish that job in a day. But it is faster with a gun.

Ok I won't get one then. Thanks Ed.

Yer welcome. If you're not used to shingling, expect to spend a long day getting it done. Have a plan before you start the job because you don't want to waste time figuring out where to start, how to do it, etc. when you get on the roof. It will also help speed things up a little if you have someone to hand you the shingles, while you're putting them down. A second set of hands helps a lot for different tasks. Good luck.

i guess you'll have to weigh swinging a hammer vs handling the gun all day, I'd think the gun would be faster and less tiring as well. Maybe buy a HF unit and then sell it afterwards on CL. Or buy one on CL. And sell it later, could almost end up being a wash financially in that scenario.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

That's a good point, Loring. The only thing I'd add to that is that sometimes the nailers have problems shooting nails when they shouldn't. You want to be careful of that in a used gun.

              David,

I use my Hitachi roofing nailer to do odd jobs like installing Tyvek or other vapor barriers. So don't limit yourself thinking about the roofing jobs only.

As far as the rest of swinging the hammer stuff. 2 of us did a 35square hip roof, including nailing the tarpaper, BY HAND. That little roof is no problem
