    Yankee Screwdriver

I have an OLD Craftsman Yankee screwdriver but don't have bits for it. Modern bits (hex body) do not fit. Any suggestions on what type of bits fit and where to get them?

You can either buy an adapter to use hex bits or buy some that look like this

Lee Valley sells reproductions of the original Yankee-style bits, either singly or in sets; however there are three different shank sizes so you'll need to know which size you need. You can measure this most accurately by inserting drill bits into the chuck until you find the correct diameter. The sets offer good value since they include straight, Phillips, and square drive bits in the most common sizes (I bought the 8-bit set for my old #30 Yankee Driver).

They also sell the hex adapters that Tom mentions, however a Yankee-type driver needs proper Yankee bits!

www.sears.com is currently selling three spiral ratcheting screwdrivers. Just search for yankee screwdriver. If I were you I'd go to a Sears hardware store and look at them, get the number xxx.xxxxxxx and look up and see if the bits aren't available at the sears parts store. Or even have the bits in the B&M store.

          Sears tools without shipping charges

I wanted a $6 tool from the Sears site but they wanted $6 shipping and wouldn't ship it to the store so I could save the shipping cost. Stopped in the local store which didn't have the tool but they ordered it shipped to my house without any shipping charges. Order your small items from the Sears store and save the cost of shipping.

Great info --- I found a few of these in my dad's garage and I had the very same question.

I modified a typical hex driver with a dremel tool to fit my yankee driver. it was not hard but I had a bit to compare to. I just used a cutting blade.
