I just received this infrared thermometer and it is a neat gadget. Now, I wonder how I will use it. I have the feeling that this will be one of those toys that will come in handy some day, I just don't know what for yet.

I have one of those laser-aimed, IR reading guns. What I use it for...
check the oven temperature calibration when my wife complains
check the air at the air conditioning outlets, should blow 60 degree air or so on a hot day, if its not then the A/C is broken, time to call the repair man.
check for abnormally hot spots on stereo, TV, etc electronics items, and lighting fixtures
Check the refrigerator and freezer compartments for the right temperature
look for hot or cold spots on the wall due to lack of insulation. check surface temperature of motors and stuff in the shop.

I use mine when I'm cooking in dutch ovens on open fires they are really handy.

I have also used them to check for leaking steam traps, bad electrical connections, bad bearing on large fans that you couldn't shut off without getting hollered at etc. vary handy tool.

I use them at work for heating/cooling issues. You can use them to check oven temps, food temps, pool water temp, etc too.

My wife is one of those who thinks everything is broken.
Something always smells like it's burning.
or gas leaking
or water dripping.
OR she always tells me the air conditioning is broken if she feels just a little warm and if dinner did not come out perfect,
the oven temperature is wrong.

The washing machine or the dryer makes funny noises (I would too if I had been working for 30 years)

The car always makes funny noises and a spot of water anywhere means something's leaking.

one time in ten or twenty she might be onto something so i always have to check.

OTOH, If a bulb burns out, she says she thinks there's something wrong with the light (duh!)

She doen't spend too much money on clothes though. She end up taking most everything back because
1. the seams not straight
2, the arms aren't the same length (off by 1/16th of an inch)
3 the shoes aren't exactly the same color (right and left)
4. size 7-1/2 is too big and size 7 too small
5. etc, etc etc.

Make sure to pay attention to the instructions and how the measuring zone is calculated. as you are further away from the object the thermometer is measuring a larger area. for instance at 10" you are measuring a 1" spot, at 10' you are measuring a 1' spot. Also they become less accurate as the color is more reflective, they prefer flat back surfaces.

Yes, the instructions say to measure within 2 feet. Also have the laser pointer on the spot to be measured. Actually I have found a use for it already. The dog (2 yr old lunatic Boxer) thinks its a gas to chase the laser dot around the room!
