HF 95236 Wet Grinder Sharpening System

So, I have to ask, can you get a better edge than with waterstones? I got a kit not too long ago and used them a few times. Now certainly, if this is faster/ cheaper, I'd rather go with this. However I'm interested in how it compares.

The grit on the HF and Scheppach grinding stones can be changed between 250 and 1000 grit. A quick honing on a 4000 to 8000 grit waterstone will produce a finer edge.

How does everyone go about squaring the blade to the wheel? My first attempt left me with a slight angle on the blade. Had to fiddle for a while to get it close to square. Do ya'll just eyeball?

That's what I did, I eyeballed it. I had to fiddle with mine too. It worked so much faster than the plate glass sandpaper method, it was still worth it to me.

I have the HF unit which I purchased after the purchase of the HF lathe to sharpen my gouges. Rather than risk messing up the lathe tools, I purchased the Jet gouge jig and it works great on my sharpener.

In addition, I bought the flat table accessory (cannot remember if it was Jet or Tormek) to sharpen my flat lathe tools and it also works just fine.

At this point, I have not shaped the wheel to roundness.

If you search HF online, you will find a number of the accessories available via mail order. The only one that I plan on purchasing is the grading stone.

My biggest concern is the cost of replacing the wheel, which doesn't seem to be available from HF and the wheels from other mfgrs is lots more than what I spend on the original unit.

Replacement wheels are available from Grizzly for $55.50 plus shipping. That is one of the reasons why I decided to keep both the HF unit and the Scheppach Tiger 2000. I paid around $65.00 - $70.00 for the HF grinder and about $90.00 for the Tiger 2000.

Did you buy the Jet Gouge Jig with the hinge? I am wondering how it works.

I just bought the Jet Profiled Honing wheel and fits the Grinding wheel side of the Tiger 2000 (the threads are the correct direction and size) but it does not fit on the honing wheel side as the threads on the shaft are a smaller size. I don't think it will fit the left hand side of the HF grinder as the treads are reversed - don't know about the right hand side. I haven't found a US source for the Scheppach profiled honing wheel.

Has anyone used the knife sharpening jig with the HF unit? Last night I tried using the jig on an old drop point knife that I had dulled cutting asphalt shingles. When I was done it would cut paper, but I had some trouble getting the angle set. I'm not satisfied, but I was doing it in a hurry (again).

Sorry about the late reply. I bought the Jet Gouge Jig, but it doesn't have a hinge. It has a fixture that fits on the bar and a gouge holder that fits into the fixture with a sharpened point. It works just fine, though you have to be careful not to let it it slip out of the fixture. I wanted the Tormek one with the hinge, but it was a bit over my budget.
