Is this 14" Universal Band Saw worth $100?

    http://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/tls/1042648141.html

I don't have much more than $250 to spend on a band saw at this time and would rather get something like this and put another $150 into it than get a small 9 or 10" saw. I currently us a Bosch jig saw as a band saw. I like the idea of this larger saw as my father has some 6-8" walnut slabs that I would like to someday resaw. Can that be done with a 1/3 hp motor and this saw?

Thats not much ooomph for a BS and you probably wont get very far trying to resaw with that. I would also bet that you would have to put more than $150 into it to get it up to par by the time you have potentialy replaced belts, tires, guides and got a couple of decent blades and then you will still be stuck with a 1/3hp motor.

Better to keep you you eye out for another deal or see if you can get lucky on the Lowes Delta BS clearance. Even that Delta with only 3/4HP will not be the best resaw tool but plenty of folks manage it with a good blade, machine setup and a slow feed rate.

If that BS had at least 3/4 HP as I assume you want to re-saw at some point.. that would be a great deal if all components are there.. tires in good shape.. etc. etc. But.. as Jon stated I would be very patient in hard economic times and keep your eyes open for a used Jet.. Delta.. etc. for aound $200-$250 on average and with people in economic trouble.. maybe even less.

The saw will do curves fine.. but even if you don't do any re-sawing now and you stay with WW... you will in the future.... trust me. S0.. better to wait and get one with a bit more HP and capable of taking a 6" riser if you can't afford to go 16" and up from the git go.

Even though you don't have a BS now... DON'T succumb to the temptation of jumping at the first thing that comes along. Be selective about what you can afford as a deal will come along eventually that will be a great one most likely. Discipline and patience rule the day...

      Good luck...

Is Lowes clearing out the Delta Band Saws?
