My dad has a high-speed grinder that I am interested in using to sharpen the lathe tools. I think using a slow-speed one would be easier. Would a variable speed controller work to slow it down?

I don't think it will. Due to the differences between universal and induction motors, a router speed controller will not do the job. I am sure Loring can elaborate more when he gets here.

I remember this from before. The first one Loring says no, the second one, he gave someone a way to possibly do it (never heard if they did it or not). She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

The second one I said no, too. I did say a variable frequency drive would work, but they're expensive.http://www.bt3central.com/showthread...+speed+control

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

If you run very fast in the same direction as the grinder is turning, you will not burn your tools...

High speed steel tools should be able to take it so long as you grind, pause, grind, pause, etc... I believe that's why it's called high speed steel....anyone??Keith Z. Leonard
