    which HVLP?

I want to get an HVLP gun and don't know which to get or which models you all are talking about when you say HF and Rockler sell the same unit. I've seen this one at HF and wonder if anyone has it or knows about it first hand?

The system many folks refer to is the Harbor Freight 44677. (First link) The second link is from a BT3 search.

What sized projects are you spraying?

the one you show is designed to be hooked up to a compressor/drier etc.
Typically you need a fairly high CFM unit for the HVLP sprayers (the High Volume part requirement).

The ones discussed from HF and Rockler are a unit with a turbine pump integral to the system and thus does not need a compressor. The pump is more of a high volume low pressure pump.

I will be using it for everything from a little towel rack to possibly a car in the spring. And it has to like nitro-lacquer 'cause everything looks better with 15-20 rubbed out clear coats.

One of the things that drew me to this gun is having the paint fed via tube instead of directly under the gun so I don't have to worry about the angle when I need to spray up under a shelf or something.

I've been using my Wagner pressure feed cup gun the last few days to spray my daughters new kitchen table. My Wagner is a conversion gun - air comes from a small compressor - but the same gun can be set up to work off a fan. I was spraying Resisthane, a water based pre-cat lacquer. To spray the Resisthane, I have turned the gun sideways and even upside down. It sprays fine that way. You can get nozzle sets of various sizes so you can spray real thin or real thick finishes. I have sprayed water (for practice) up to Minwax's water based poly in viscosity with the standard nozzles. My Wagner can also use a pressure pot but I have not tried it. I got it from Gleam Paint for about $125.

I would not want to pay for a big pressure pot of automotive finish or the thinner required to clean out the gun. For what the finish costs, you may want to spend more on the gun but I like my Wagner, works fine for me. I have heard that pros usually use gravity feed for car finishing because it uses up the finish more completely than a pressure feed gun does. At ~$100/qt, not wasting finish seems like it would be important. What I spray is about $30/gallon.
