    A Pulley Question

    I have to replace the planer motor. The motor shops all say it is cheaper to replace than repair. It has a 3/4" dia shaft. All 3 motor places I called last week said they don't make motors with a 3/4" shaft any more. The motors with the specs I want have a 7/8" shaft. Will it hurt the pulley I have to bore the hole 1/8" larger?

      Seems like it would be possible if there is plenty of material around the hub. You will likely have to have the key way rebroached and take into consideration the set screw, that enough threads are left for getting it good and tight. A plus would be that a machinest could true it all up for smoother running. Why not a new pulley?
      Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things

          I think when all is done you will be better off with a new pulley like Daryl said.
          Hard to get is perfectly centered when reboring, and you have to deal with making the keyway. I don't think a new pulley will be very expensive. Nows the time to change the ratio if you want it faster or slower, as well.

                  New pulley like everyone else has said.
                  Can you modify the current pulley? Yes, but what would the cost be?
                  Have a machine shop do it - cheaper to buy a new pulley
                  Can you do it yourself? probably but if you don't get the bore true you will wear out the new motor shaft bearing/seal quick. The keyway would have to be broached a 1/16". You could file the current key down a 1/16" and have a rectangular key, but you will shear it off under a load & it will booger up the motor shaft & pulley shaft.
                  It's going to be alot cheaper to buy a new pulley.

                      If I can do it myself.. I probably will. But.... in this case get the new pulley as suggested. A well balanced pulley is critical to vibration..motor bearing wear and belt wear. Sometimes it's better to put your cash on the counter.. put the matter to bed and move on.
