Wynn Filters -- Paper or Plastic ?

I hate to even post this....I've been reading through a lot of different DC threads and now I'm adding another.

There are two (maybe three) Wynn filters that will fit the HF DC. The cost isn't a lot different and I'd just go with the spun poly if that were the only decision.

But there's a drastic difference in the filter area here:

    (1) Filter #35A100SBOL
    17.5” x 23”
    Open-Closed
100 Sq. Ft. of 100% Spun Bond Polyester

    (2) Filter #35A274BLOL
    17.5” x 23”
    Open-Closed
274 Sq. Ft. of 80/20 Blend Paper

Almost triple the surface area ? That sounds like it would have a huge impact on the air flow. The other filter is the 9E300BL which has 300 sq. ft but would presumably be harder to mount.

Between the first two, thinking only of getting the most from the HF DC, is the paper filter the way to go ?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I did the same agonizing last year. The paper is cheaper, has far more surface, but does not allow washing.

Finally I got the paper, as I determined I might never get around to washing this filter, seeing that I only a weeked ww-er.

And after so many months, I am happy with that decision. Clearing the filter with a few taps, and some blows of air, is all I need.

      Thanks, that helps.

Did you see a big improvement in air flow ?

I'm not going to be able to pull the trigger on a cyclone any time soon so my thinking right now is to have my HF DC set up for the tablesaw & router and then to watch for another on craiglist. With the 2nd, I could set up an area with the bandsaw, jointer and planer surrounding it.

I tried some PVC 4" ducting with the HF DC and two of the grizzly bags before and just didn't have good luck. The planer and jointer would just clog things up. If the airflow is much improved with the cannister filter, I might give it another shot.

      Thanks again.

Comparing with the bags I had before, a huge improvement with the canister.

You are rich (in available space) - you are planning for two DCs! Me, I just pull and push my single DC for all my tools, and keep dreaming - some day, I'll have a full-grown DC setup !

My garage is 24' X 27'. But it has a corner taken out -- the laundry room was expanded via a deck like structure to create an office downstairs. And until I get my shed built, I have my 2-year old's Ford F150 in there, the riding mower, push mower, wood chipper, etc. etc. etc. It's not the best space but it WILL be down the road !

Just have to figure out if one DC and the ductwork will be enough with the DC I can afford right now.

Boy they sure grow up quick these days a Ford F150 for a two year old. I was barely able to negotiate a tricycle at that age let alone a full size truck.

In ratio of his size to mine vs. his truck to mine, it is full sized ! haha Even seats two and has a bed for hauling his stuff. It's now about 3 days old. He spends more time putting up the hood and checking the "batty" than actually driving it. Maybe that's just how it is with all Fords?? hahaha

Here's the layout I'm thinking my way through for this new workshop --we just moved a few months back:

I bought the spun-bond polyester for my HF 2HP DC. When I called to place the order, I was also unsure which was best. Bill Wynn answered the phone and when I explained my indecision, he essentially said that the 100 sq ft of filter area was more than sufficient in terms of airflow and that the spun-bond, although more expensive, would be a lifetime investment that I'd never have to worry about.

I've been pleased with its performance and if I had it to do over, I'd buy it again. It's so much better than the stock bags, in all respects, that it's like I bought a different dust collector.

You say the jointer / planer cog up your DC? A second DC won't solve your problem... A cyclone will...

It doesn't have to be a huge monstrosity of a cyclone though. A 30 gallon steel trash can and a cyclone lid hosed in line and you are all good...

                  The Cyclone Separator lids...

Click this link, then scroll UP one item to see the screw in fittings... Use these for your 4" hose ends..

Click this link, scroll down to the 5th item, that is the DC hose I have in 2.5" and it ROCKS!

Hope this helps at least a little bit!

If your DC is plugging up wth your jointer and your planer I would look at other possibilities, like maybe some sharp turns or a coiled hose. My stock HF DC has no issues before I added a collecting drum to the set up (for the heavier things to drop out). Heck, it pulls so well that not many shavings stay in the drum until the bag is getting past the half-way full mark. Just a thought - the cannister is still on my list of upgrades too.
                    Blessings,
                    Chiz

I have the Wynn Paper filter. One other difference is that it has a smaller particle size than the spun. 0.5 micron vs. 1.0 micron. That is what finally decided it for me.

The trouble with going by surface area is that different materials may have different permeabilities. Flow resistance goes down with increasing area, but comparing one material with another is difficult.

That said, I have the 300 ft^2 paper 9E300BL (I think that's the one) on my HF DC. I have had it for several years, certainly longer than the shorter ones have been available. It works fine, but of course I can't compare it to the others. Yes the flow is a heck of a lot better than with the stock bags, but who is surprised by that? It's tall enough that I can't maneuver the DC areound my low-ceilinged basement shop very well, but the paper seems to have stood up pretty well.

If you do add a cartridge to your DC, make sure you also add the Thien baffle. This will save you a lot of bother cleaning out the filter. Before putting that in, I used to beat the cartridge with a stick each time I turned off the DC, always releasing large amounts of dust. Since adding the baffle, very little comes out, and I don't lose flow the way I did before.

Did the same as LarryG - polyester. Lasts forever, easy to clean, wash it out once a year, never worry (or almost never) about poking a hole in it.

I have the paper cartridge and have a trash can separator. I am also a weekend warrior. The reason for my choice was the finer filtering and the surface area allows for greater flow. Also I have found that using a lawn blower can loosen particles and restore airflow after a few shots on the side to drop any cake working my way around the cartridge with the blower does a bit more. I expect that with care the paper will last a lifetime as well as the spun poly cartridge.

For the benefit of those pondering their choices, one advantage of Wynn's newer 35A Series filter, in both paper and spun-bond flavors, is that the cannister is less than two feet high -- as Alan mentions, considerably shorter than the 9E300BL (which is still available). Overall, the HF unit with the 35A conversion becomes about a foot shorter than in its stock configuration with the metal support arm for the upper bag in place. Another advantage of the 35As is that they bolt straight on; everything you need to make the conversion is in the box.
