    Homier 13” planer /moulder

    Homier 13” planer /moulder

Anyone out there ever seen/used/owned on of these?

I am considering getting a bit more planer than I need, and found this one at Homier.

    http://www.homier.com/default.asp?dp...tail&sku=03143

It appears to be the same as the Griz G1037, which is supperceded by the G1037Z

I would go up to Indiana to pick it up to save shipping. I called their customer service and they are sending me a manual and price list of blades and moulder profiles.
I did the math on the planning feed rate and with 3 blades I get 100 CPI so if its adjust right it should give a good finish.

I haven't bought one or used one. That said just before Christmas They were in town for 3 days. I looked it over and was impressed. The price is right and it seemed to be pretty heavy duty. My Mentor has the Grizzley and They do look very similar. Bill

        Thanks

Yep it LOOKS like the Grizzley, until you remove the cover that hides the drive mechanism from the planer head to the drive rollers. (BTW I was “doctordremel” the originator of this thread, changed my screen name a year or so ago)

I bought one of these not long after the post but until 4 months ago had yet to assemble it and run some cuts. Here’s the difference the Griz and the Jet both have a two-speed gear box design to allow for a slower feed rate while mounding and for a better final pass when planning. Homier advertises this as a Planer/Moulder but its only ONE speed (the higher one). After about 6 passes the roller stopped feeding, I tore it apart and found a very poorly designed drive set of plastic gears, sprockets and a chain. There is no protection from the chips spilling into the chain sprocket area and they get caught up in the chain. So I made a cardboard shield and made a few more passes and it died again The other problem is that the two steel drive roller sprockets, the sprocket/gear wheel and the idler pensioner are all in different planes so the chain climbs off the sprocket/gear wheel and grinds the teeth off. I really was scratching my head wondering what someone was thinking when this was designed. For all practical purposes it’s not remarkable that it failed but that it even worked at all! There are two posts that hold the two plastic gears (the gears may be ABS there sure don’t look like nylon of delrin) and the exploded drawing shows two part numbers with different offsets, but mine appears identical, so it possible mine was just made wrong. I ordered a new sprocket/gear wheel but will not assemble it until I can jury rig the moving parts into one plane.

Plan B is to chuck the whole gear/chain reducer assembly and steel sprocket and drive it with a variable speed motor, that way I can dial in what ever works best. And use it for mounding too.

Other that THAT it’s a good planer, ;-)

When I ordered the repair parts I bought an extra set of knives I think they were about $25 for three.

I looked into just buying the Jet/Griz gear box but it was about $250 just for the parts.

So this is probably my most disappointing Homier purchase but its in my shop and on a mobile base and I’ve got 1100 bf of lumber to plane so I guess I better figure out how to make it work.

Good luck with your situation. I have shopped frequently at Homier... they are here in Indiana. But I had a similar experience with their 3HP router. Although this router helped me get started in woodworking about 16 months ago, I don't use it anymore. I saw some pictures of a Ryobi RE600 router in a book and it looked exactly like the Homier. So I bought a used Ryobi RE600 on ebay - can't buy them new anymore. I found out the Homier *was* a Ryobi RE600 knockoff... same castings, plastic injection mouldings, etc. But the similarity was only skin-deep, just like you found on their planer. The Ryobi has electronic soft-start, on-board speed control, tighter plunge mechanism, and *much* less vibration and noise in operation... it is a dream to operate. I will only use the Homier for spare parts on things like the plastic handles. I even bought a second RE600 on ebay...

ExYankee, do oyu have any pics, or can you take some, as I might be going to one of their shows to get a close look at it. Like ot see if it has been updated or if maybe you got a dud.

Someone at another forum has one, maybe less then a year I think he said in his post, and did not seem to have the problems you did. He also stated that when he called homier they said he could order parts for the grizzly and they should fit fine.

Also I was told by homier that they will stop carrying this item soon. Mind you they also said they are out of stock and will not be getting anymore. yet as of right now they are still listed in stock and ready to ship on their site. I guess its easier to say they don;t carry it then answer the 6 questions I asked.

ANYBODY else have one or seen them at a show recently?
