    6" drill bits

Does anyone know where you can get 6" or so drill bits, preferably brad points (118 deg std twist would be a second choice)? a set of 7 would be nice (1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16 and 1/2)
although probably I would be happy with 3/16 and 1/4 and maybe 5/16.

I have a set of 12" brad points but they are a bit much, can't find anything over the normal lengths.

Usage: Drilling pilot holes for 1/4 or 5/16 lag screws (i.e. 3/16 or 1/4" drill bits) for 3 to 3.5" long screws through a 3/4" template block.
If I have 1/2" - 1" in the drill chuck (a minimal amount, any less than 1/2" would not be good practice I think, I would prefer more like 1") and 3.5" screw length plus 3/4 template, I need a bit with an overall length of 5-1/2", minimum.

Recent projects where I'm lagging 2x4 and 1x4 stuff into the sides and ends of 2x4 and 4x4 and I want good holding power need 3.5" screws.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Contact Holbren for the length of his Brad point bits. Sears now has a set, I saw them a while back, made in Germany. McFeely's has some 118 degree bits that fit (Jobber's length), McMaster Carr has both jobber's length (shorter then the standard "mechanics length) and even shorter still.

Mcmaster carr does carry long length bits. I have bought some that were 6" before. Now it appears they have only 8", 12" and 18". Look under metal working and general purpose bits.
      They do carry 118 degree.

They may carry 6" in the short flute style. Come to think of it, that is what I ordered.

If you can use 135 deg, try here.

the keyword is "aircraft" drill bits. they'll be either 6" or 12", good luck with the brad point.
