    DUH moment

this weekend I was working on a project and pulled out the 2" brad nailer to tack some strips in place.

Oiled it (three drops in the air port). It was empty so I grabbed a box of nails that was out and loaded 1.5" nails into it.
The first one only went in partway, I checked the air presuure it was good. Another went in partway. Then it jammed. I cleared it. It jammed again. In frustration I grabbed my 16 Ga. Finish nailer and it was already loaded so I finished the job with that one.

A few hours later I was thinking. The box of nails was not in the big box of assorted length nails I have for the brad nailer... OMG, it was a box of 16 ga. nails. DUH.

The clues were all there. Like, the box of nails was not with the other nails. and they looked bigger and beefier in hindsight. It didn't work right to begin with. screwed up four times when I"ve never even had a jam before. I guess I was in a hurry, it was already midnight.

I hope I didn't damage the brad nailer.

Anybody else do that and live to tell about it?

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

i used my brad and finish nailer for the first time when making my patio shelves (i havent used yet on another project, but will be soon). so on several occasions, i put the wrong one into the wrong gun. i know the smaller the number the thicker the nail, but i just kept on going the other way.

on my last set of nailing, i even grabbed the wrong size nail and ended up shooting 6 brads out the face of the project.

      along those lines

I bought the HF roofing nailer when I did my roof. After I bought it a friend at work said I could use his roofing nailer. I decided to keep the HF and use it. The first few shingles went fine. Then it started to Jam. At first every other nail then every nail. I sent LOML to HF to return the gun and I went to the friends house and picked up his nailer. I got back up on the roof and had the same problem!

That's when I found out that the air compressor was turned off. They just don't work well on 15 Lbs of air pressure!!
      Cut twice.... measure??

I haven't used the wrong diameter nails (yet) but have tried to drive nails with insufficient air pressure and had to turn the compressor back on. Mine is a noisy oil-less (Bostitch) and I get tired of the racket in the shop.

loring this is the exact reason i bought a angled finish nailer with the straight brad

          can't screw it up

although i have thrown the wrong angle nailes in the 6-1 nailer a couple times with similar results

            Phil -

The angle finish nailer didn't prevent me from a DUH ...

A few years ago, I loaded up my new HF angled 15g finish nailer. I shot maybe one nail, then it jammed a bunch of times. I returned it for another. Loaded it up - same thing.

Then I figured out that I had loaded it wrong. DUH, DOH, OOPS

Oh, good. It's not just me! The first time I tried the 15, I got a stack jammed. I though i was going to have to disassemble the beast to get it freed up. Now I'm a bit more careful.

Gonna have to watch for the brad/finish nail confusion, though.
