    Bandsaw Blade lengths

    I have a G1019Z 1 1/2HP Grizzly bandsaw. It's an odd size, 98" plus a 6" riser block to make it 110".

Because of this, I've never really used it because I didn't want to have to bother special ordering the blades.

So, I was looking for a stanard sized bandsaw to replace the grizzley I bought. I found a Ridgid 14" bandsaw with riser for the same price I bought my Grizzly. Thing is, it's only 3/4 HP.

But- a new wrench was thrown into the works, as I just have seen that Grizzley now has a 4" BS riser block. That means for $25 I can replace the old riser block for the shorter one and have a 106" capacity.

Looking at websites, I see that 105" is standard. Do you think there's enough "play" in the saw to put a 105" blade on there, or should I just buy the Ridgid?

    thanks!

Having an odd size only means that you probably wont find that size at a retail store. Most mail order companys, will sell any size blade length. They usually have a huge roll of the blade already cut, and when an order is placed, they cut it to length and weld it. I believe this is what Suffolk machinery does...

FWIW, I have a small BS, and I'm using a blade that's 1" shorter than what it calls for. I think you'll be OK with the 105".

All of my bandsaws have had "odd" blade lengths, but I haven't found this to be a problem. In fact, I've saved money by ordering from timberwolf direct rather than buying timberwolf from woodcraft. It'a about 10$ cheaper per blade, and easier than going to the store. I also use highland hardware's wood slicer, which is ordered in any 1" increment anyway, and isn't found in stores.

I think you'd be better off just ordering some blades online than replacing your already nice bandsaw w/ the less powerful ridgid.

Agree with the other posters, a custom bandsaw blade is no big thing, easily available by mail from many sources, why buy premade blades? Certainly no reason to trade bandsaws.

All bandsaw blades, even standard sizes, are made from continuous stock, cut and welded to spec lengths.

I agree that replacing the BS isn't the best choice at this point. But, I would like the option to pick up a blade at a local store once in a while. So, loosing 2" of resaw isn't a big deal if I can buy my blades one at a time locally.

But maybe you're all right, and I should just call timberwolf and get a basic compliment of blades and get that big purcahse over with.

            Thanks!

Iturra Designs... 1-888-722-7078 (no website)... Any size you want, custom welded, fast. Every kind of bladestock imaginable, including the very same stock the high-dollar brands use. The welds are better quality than you'll find practically anywhere.

That's why I started getting mine made to order. The welds were absolutely terrible on about half the premade blades I bought. A local shop makes mine with a one-day notice for about the same price and with perfect welds. The only down side is if I needed one on shorter notice.

you might check around. Local industrial supply, woodworking stores or sharpeneing services may be able to make custom ones for you locally. Try asking your woodworking store if they know of any sources.
