So far I have taken back a HF 8 inch drill, and a Ryobi dp121L. Can anyone recommend a good drill press between 180 to 250 bucks?

I would be a bit patient and save $50 more (possibly a discount, etc.) for the Rigid 1550 DP at $299. IMO.. the best DP you can get for $300 or under. I would like a Steel City 17" with 6' quill travel, but can't justify it as I got the Rigid 4 years or so ago and it does everything it should.
Good clamp table.. light.. decent quill travel at 2 3/4"?.. excellent run-out.. very quick belt change.. etc. etc.
I think it would be worth the wait as it might just eliminate another up-grade down the road as most of us can testify would probably result.. -
what's your issues with the ones you took back...?

The HF one actually ran smoother than the ryobi. The HF was just too small (8 inch model). I am thinking about getting their 16 speed floor model. Seems alot of people like them. The ryobi wouldn't get down to 500, just 550-570, the top end was 2750-2860. The ryobi also had a bad rumble to it at 1500 RPM and lower. Also, one of the hand grips fell apart.Comment

so,you're looking for wider speed range, more swing and better fit and finish and tighter mechanical tolerances.
If you are doing big bits and stuff then you should be looking for something that goes a bit below 300 RPM, like 250.
in addition to a 16" floor standing model you should be looking at a Jet or Delta brand for a bit better quality control.Last edited by LCHIEN; 01-21-2008, 10:39 AM.

I have a Grizzly G7944 14" floor model that I really like. I can't remember what the list price is new (price + delivery fee) as I bought mine used. It has 12 speeds from 140 - 3050 rpm. The finish on it isn't as nice as the 16" Delta at Lowes, but it was significantly less expensive. The problem with buying from Grizzly is the delivery fees, unless you live close to a store. Just a thought!!Comment
