Seller doesnt know much about ww tools and there is one for sale locally and originally he wanted $150 for it, then he did some research and found someone selling one for $460. Now guess what, his price has now changed 3x as much. I dont know condition or how old it is but would like to know what a fair price is for one? Im making plans to go see it later in the week. Any help would be great. Thanks

in 2000 they sold for $580, list price (MSRP).
street price was probably around $450-475 I would guess and being used and 7 years out of production $450 would be a bit high for most tools.
OTOH, there are few low cost wide drum sanders available so this might raise the prices somewhat. Similar performax and delta models start around $800 to 1000.
I also don't know how well the Ryobi worked - at the lower price point there may have been some compromises and this might explain why they don't make one anymore.
As always, the value of used equipment is determined by the anxiousness of the seller to sell and of the buyer to buy.Last edited by LCHIEN; 11-26-2007, 01:59 PM.

The current Steel City 55210 is essentially the same machine with a few minor updates. It sells for around $700.00. There was also a company in California selling a version under their label, prior to the Steel City's debut.
$460 is high unless he is including a lot of extra items such as a stand, paper rolls, etc. I have seen these selling for around $250 ~ 300 on Craig's list, etc, from time to time.
Loring - I think Ryobi discontinued this machine when Home Depot became their exclusive distribution channel. This isn't exactly the kind of high sales volume product that the BORG would want taking up it's valuable space. If they weren't interested in carrying them there would be no other sales outlet for them under the Ryobi brand.Comment

that might well be, it doesn't fit with the more pedestrian tools Ryobi likes to sell. Even the BT3100 doesn't fit anymore, apparently, as successful as it was!...

Just tell the guy you're disappointed because he upped his price by 300%, and make him think you'll walk. See if he'll cut you some slack. If not, tell him "Thanks anyway" and say it's out of principle. If he doesn't sell it, then ask again and see if he's more reasonable. Of course, if you really want this thing, the only way to get it for sure is pay the price he wants right now (before he decides to raise it again
). Fact is, they're not seen for sale every day, and any found elsewhere are either gonna be un-shippable, or will set you back a ton for freight.

I have one and don't have any problems with it. Mine was a refurb and the Cummins display. (I think it was the last one they sold) As such it had some minor damage but the parts were available to bring it up to speed. I think i gave $250 and got about 30 sanding strips thrown in.
Use the fact that it has been out of production for seven years and parts availability may be low. I know they no longer market or stock the precut strips. Not a problem, but a bargaining point. Offer $300 and walk at any counter over $350. Even then, hesitate to see if he will come down more.Don, aka Pappy,

Check the condition of the conveyor belt and the bearings on the drum. You may be able to lift on the open end of the drum housing. You should be able to adjust that out. Ask if he has the shims for the conveyor.Don, aka Pappy,

I went today and looked at the wds 1600, earlier he had it running but for some reason when I was there it wouldnt turn on. Machine is in good shape, wiring as far as I could tell was good. Tried the reset button and nothing, checked the brushes in the motor and they we good. Tried different outlets and ex. cords.Any ideas what it could be? If he cant get it to run what should I offer him if anything? ThanksComment

Without knowing the problem, I would walk. It could be as simple as a bad switch or as bad as the motor.Don, aka Pappy,

Suggestion - worst case, bad motor. Check with the Ryobi parst dealser - M&D mower or Ordertree and see how much the motor costs - that give you a worst case repair cost ( assuming you can do the work yourself).
Lets say the motor is $150.
How much is the sander worth to you? If you had to buy one today, new, it would cost you maybe $800-1000 for a Delta or performax, so put an upper limit on how much you want to spend including an assumed motor replacement, and show the guy what the motor costs and bargain from there. If its just a switch, then you'll be that far ahead.
if you are willing to spend say $200 and the motor is $150 then your bargaining range is $50 max and $0 min. - "take that worthless piece of junk off your hands" deal.

I talked to the owner today and he talked to Ryobi and they said it sounds like a bad pc board and gave him a $26 price. Im good mechanically so I prolly can fix this myself. His original asking price was $150 now minus the $26 board and I could get this for around $100 if its the board thats the problem. Does anyone think this is a fair price? ThanksComment

It's a steal at that price. I think the board attached to a new speed control switch. (Mine had a damaged speed control switch.)Don, aka Pappy,
