I was picking up some Christmas decorations at Wal-Mart ant they had some heavy duty remote contols(The were GE I believe) that were rated at 15 amp. That should handle most 1.5-2 hp dust units. It was only $14.95. People have had mixed results with the ACE unit that is also on sale but it is only rated at 13 amp.

Most of those are rated full 15 amps only for resistive loads (heaters).
Motors and incandescant lamps have separate, lower ratings.
That doesn't mean it won't work, but it might work for a short time, overheat or you might get lucky and it work forever, with your DC.

This is one situation where I'd always err to the side of caution, and get one that you know will do the job it was intended for. As Loring said, motor loads are a different animal, because of the increased starting load that occurs every time you turn it on.Comment

It is designed to work with lights and other decorations and not heaters so I suspect your concern is not necessary. I do not know for sure. I tried the Ace model during one of the other sales. It worked a couple of dozen times but then gave up. This one should have 14% more capacity and should do the trick.read the fine print on the device or in the instructions closely.

usually the heater or resistive rating is highest, then the lighting rating is lower and the motor rating is lowest. It is designed to work with lights and other decorations and not heaters so I suspect your concern is not necessary. Guess which value the marketing guys put on the package in big print?
If the heater rating is 15A then I would guess offhand the light rating is 12-13 amps and the motor rating would be around 8-10 amps.
I don't mean to be alarmist but as an engineer I don't use anything over its ratings.
It may work (for now) but I don't want to take chances.Last edited by LCHIEN; 11-21-2007, 12:41 PM.
