    Shopsmith

I have the opportunity to get a Shopsmith for $150. I'm thinking that this would fill my need for a lathe and also give me some other options.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks,

That sounds like a pretty good deal even if all you use it for is a lathe. You might also ask about this over in the turning section.

I never had a Shopsmith, but always thought it would be a cool tool to have if you had the space and all the parts for it. They look impressive as heck.

I'd jump on it. I've never owned one, but I've seen them demo'd a few times. I'd never pay full price for one - but for $150 it seems that at the very least you'd get a good variable-speed lathe and drill press. Good luck!

I have one...It is a cool machine. I don't use it any more because I teach woodshop and have access to my room 24/7. I am selling my shopsmith...it comes with all of the attachments except the planer and jointer. I am asking 2000$.

But if you can get it for $150 jump on it!

Never had one but knew a distributer in SC. He had every gadget they made and most with separate motors for demo purposes. Best benefits/tools I could see were the lathe, drill press, and horizontal boring machine.

will you have to buy a bunch of accessories and parts to make it function as a lathe (various chucks and headstocks) or is it ready to go?

$150 for a shop smith is very low and would seem like a good deal, but I hear lathe bits and pieces could run a bunch.

I had a S/S years ago and loved it EXCEPT for the fact that everytime you changed a function, like going from drill press back to saw, you had to re-align everything. But if you are going to use it only as a lath, sounds like a really great deal.
