You may have too many router bits when:

You have as many as Hank Lee!

I have about 70 in the States, 60 half inch and about 10 quarter inch. All carbide.

I have about 100 here in Japan, about 50 half inch and 50 quarter inch, all carbide, a few almost 40 years old.

I gave away 8 quarter inch shanked ones last week along with a 25 year old Sears router that I haven't used in 12 years - since I bought my first PC router.

When you have more router bits than you have clamps.

Yes, but does that equate to Hank Lee having too many router bits?

Absolutely! Don't tell LOML how many I have.

In that case, I need to get some more clamps right away!

When I first got my router, I bought a 30 piece 1/4" bit set, knowing that they would not serve my needs long-term. I don't regret it. I got them stupid cheap and when I just need to put a profile on a few pieces, they work just fine.

Having the cheapo set has kept me from being caught in a bind, having to pay top dollar for a bit locally. I did get a good rail & style set and a vertical panel raiser bit about the same time.

Now, if I am planning a project that will require a fair bit of routing, I can shop for the best price/quality. I've since added about a dozen additional high-quality 1/2" bits, most in sets of three.

Sadly, I am still seriously under-clamped... I need to get to work on that!
