    shop air filter!!!

Well, I finally got around to installing a Jet air filter that I bought on sale last winter. I've been using a Jet 1.5hp dust collector with a Wynn filter. The DC still still kicks up enough fine dust that I can smell the type of wood I'm working on when I fire it up. Not sure whether some escapes the filter or if the turbulence around the DC stirs up ambient dust. Can't be good for you though. I'm sure if you can smell it, you're breathing it.

Anyway, I just processed a pile of wood this morning. I had the DC and filter going. When I took off my mask after around two hours of jointing and planing, the air smelled crispy clean. No wood smell whatsoever, even with a full DC bag. What an improvement!!!

For anybody who's on the fence about an air cleaner, I can say first hand that they definitely work. Unless you have the space and cash for a first class cyclone, this is a great addition to a DC.

I bought the air filter along with a 1 HP dust collector with the 1 micron cannister filter. This is in anticipation for a Performax drium sander that I'm tild must be used with dust collection. I was amazed when I cut some MDF with my table saw. The air was clean in minutes. The air filter is sufficiently quiet too, so I keep it running well after I generate the dust.

One of the best purchases I've made so far. I have a basement shop, and now even the dust upstairs is a non-issue. The wife appreciates that.

I like the timer feature a lot on the Jet, too. Not sure who else offers a similar one, maybe all of them do.

You just don't know how much you can enjoy your shop until you have an ambient air cleaner. Shop made, or commercially made.

I've always had a ghetto air cleaner going, and recently got the jet hung over my band saw, makes a good bit of difference. Good DC is one of the most important and overlooked things in woodworking, I think.

my air cleaner does not have a built-in timer. I made one with a $20 electromechanical timer that fits in a switch box, turn the knob to the desired time (available in ranges, i think mine is 12 hours) I used a duplex switch box with the timer in one side and the outlet in the other and a pigtailed electrical cord with plug. I set my Air cleaner to run for about 6 hours when I enter the shop, when I leave at the end of the day it'll still be on and stay on for a few more hours.

            Thanks

I'd been looking for that timer switch to build a couple of my own instead of buying one. I would have liked the JDS, but even then I would need to modify it to be in a floor unit (6' ceilings).
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Which Wynn-- the paper blend or the spun poly? Besides general dust collection, I was hoping to use the new DC w/ a big nozzle as an air cleaner. Maybe a fan to move the air around so more of it gets close to the inlet. At 800 CFM (and it'll be pretty close) the air in my small shop will turn over in a couple minutes.
