    Rikon Jointers

Any one here have any experience with Rikon jointers? I am looking to get a jointer and woodcraft has the Rikons for a pretty good proce, but I can't find any talking about them. I know they make really good bandsaws so I figured the rest of there lineup would be good.

I have been looking used since I am just getting into to woodworking but, none ever seem to pop up in my area.

    Thanks for any input.

The Rikon jointers look very good. I took a look at one the last time I was at Woodcraft and may have gotten it if I didn't already have a jointer. It appears very similar to the Jet jointer. I don't think you'll see too many used ones, I haven't seen Rikon tools being offered too long.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will get one this weekend. I meant used jointers in general not just Rikon. No jointers really go up for sale my area the last one I saw was last Christmas.

I now I need to decide which Rikon to get. THey have the one with the rack and pinion microsdjust fence or the one without. There is $100 price difference between the 2.

what does the rack and pinion adjust- the tilt or the in-out position?

if its the in-out position then that hardly seems critical (maybe for the rabbet ledge?)

I beleive its just the angle. So the more expensive one has the microadjust fence, moveable power switch that is above the bed, rack and pinion fence, and 2 speed motor. The cheaper one does not have those features. It is $100 between the 2. Not sure which one to get still, not sure if any of those features really excite me.

The rack and pinion has nothing to do with the angle of the fence,, but it does with precision positioning with little back-lash. And it will take up less wall space.

The micro-adjustable fence (angle) can be appreciated if you have ever set angles on a 50 lb. cast iron fence in an attempt to hold it in position with one hand and then lock it with the other.

The side to side switch above table saves the search underneath to find the kill while keeping on eye on the spinning cutter-head. And being able to move it right or left of cutter-head covers both righties and lefties.

The 2 speed motor is mostly a gimmick IMO so.....

$100 difference.. you make the call! BTW.. have you looked at a Grizzly or the Sunhill with the much longer than 46" fence? Just a thought.

            Good luck...

I agree with the 2 speed motor being a gimmick. I was just listing the differences. I look at the grizzley's everyday, but if you include shipping they are close to $200 more. Unless I get the low end which brings the price down to the same price as the Rikon and they have the same length beds. I have not looked at sunhill. Looking at the site they have a 6 inch by 56 inch for $359 plus $100 shipping good price.

I kick myself, because I used to go to Bellihgham WA all the tiem when I lived in OR and I never bought any tools from grizzly. Now I am finally getting more serious into woodworking and trying to stock my shop and I move to a place where wood is high and it is hard to find good deals on tools.

                    Morning Comp...

Just throwing some thought at ya so you can make a wise decision before ya plop down your hard earned cash! I wasn't sure where you lived as that is not entered.. so shipping may be a big factor for you if you are not close.

The Sunhill is an excellent jointer as I had one for years and sold it to Mad Mac on this forum. I believe he is pleased. And of course.. just a thought as you have to weigh all factors to get the best ticket for you!

Again.. good luck as I gotta go make some money to pay for my bad habits!

                    Regards...
