Cool. So, it's a sort of rabet plane?

Ken, educate me in the art of eBay bidding? Why did you make a bid of $25 and then make another bid of $30 20 seconds later when nobody bid higher than your $25 bid?

I've bid on a few things in the past on eBay but never came close to winning a bid. Quite frankly, some of the bidding techniques I see leave me scratching my head. I'm sure there is logic behind them it's just that I can't figure it out.

              Dave,
Someone had set a max bid amount and Ebay automatically bids inside that max amount. When I bid $25 I was automatically outbid because someone's max was greater. I then made $30 my max and Ebay again used 'someone's' max and bid for them. I made my max $35 and that one stuck.
              Crazy isn't it?

Watch out...the slope isn't called slippery just cause it's easy to fall down...it's also impossible to come back up!!

Not to bring the thread any more off topic, but I find the best way to bid on ebay is to REALLY decide how much you are willing to pay for an item, and simply plug that number in for your bid. You must remain detached from that point on. DO NOT RAISE THIS NUMBER...you have ALREADY DECIDED you won't pay more then that. You have to be willing to let the item get away if someone else is willing to pay more.

Sometimes you win, sometimes (a lot of the time actually) you lose...but sometimes you also get the item WAY lower then you thought it'd end up going. But you never have to sit there when the auction is ending playing bid wars....
                -John

+1 on John's bidding strategy. If you get outbid, there'll be another one. As my bike-riding buddy said to me just last night, "You have to remember that eBay is a good place to buy stuff you don't absolutely have to have."

Ken, am I correct in thinking that in some countries, that $34 winning bid would be enough to land your butt in jail? For grand larceny?

I agree John. I had set $35 as my max in my head due to the high shipping. But, I can't help trying a lower max bid initially. So far I have avoided the last minute bidding fever, besides, LOML was sitting beside me so I HAD to stop! ;-)

Larry, I honestly don't know, I am honestly admitting I don't know squat about planes. I see other 45's that look in the same condition for $200 and over, but I still need to get additional cutters if I want to use the full capability of the 45. My primary reason for wanting one was for grooving and rabbeting but seeing all the cutters available is tempting. Ah yes, slippery it is.

The thing is, there is no advatange whatsoever to trying a lower max bid first.

Ebay only bids for you until the price is above someone else's max bid. If you decide you will only pay 35, there is no advantage to using a max bid of 25 first...unless of course your not really sure you want to pay 35.

arrraaghghghagh!! ...Trying not to take thread too far off topic........must talk about planes...and "you suck"ary....
