    One mans trash....

I always laugh when I see people stopping to pick up peoples trash at the ends of the driveway. Today I became one of those people.......on my way drive home I saw a guy pushing an upright Sears compressor to the end of his driveway (tomorrow is trash day in our neighborhood). I immediately stopped to see if he was indeed putting it out for the trash man and he said yes. I asked him what was wrong with it and he said he thought the tank had a hole in it because it took a long time to fill and after filling would bleed off. He also said that his wife had bouhgt him a new larger one for his birthday.

I asked him if he minded if I took it because I have the same type of compressor but mine is the horizontal tank unit. He told me it was mine for the taking and I parked my car on the street and walked the compressor three blocks to my house and went back to get my car. When I got back home I plugged it in and the motor runs smoothly so I took the cover off to check it out. I could not believe my eyes when I realized that the only thing wrong with it was the fittings on the tube from the compressor to the tank were loose. A little plumbers tape and a quick tighten and it is running like a new one. It needs new gages and a bath but I think I will keep it.

I'd feel almost guilty for not going back to the guy and showing him what the problem was, but I'd quickly get over it.. heh

        Nice score!

You don't tell the guy nothin'...
He's happy now (new compressor) and you're happy so ignorance is bliss as they say.

Wonder if that neighbor reads this forum?

My problem is just the opposite. I NEVER throw anything away, thinking I'll get around to fixing it one day , or I just might need that part or scrap of wood one day. Wife can't stand it, so I don't tell her I'm 'retaining' stuff any more!!

Good for you. Went to a person who could really used it instead of a land fill somewhere. It does make a person wonder what some people are thinking when they throw away good stuff.

I have a hard time throwing things away, because I've found that with few exceptions, I will need those very things before the trash truck gets out of sight...

Don't think of it as dumpster diving or taking someone else's trash. It's recycling, and today that's a virtue.

I sat out a horizontal Craftsman that the motor had burned up. Neighbor's son uses it as a portable air tank for fixing the companies truck tires. I always try to set stuff out that someone may be able to use several days before the trash man comes. I've sure benefited from other people that way. Good score BTW. Pat
