g. I had difficulty getting a perfectly flat smooth edge on my scrapers. I bought the mill file holder from LV and voilą. Next came the correct angle for the hook. Again I bought the burnisher from LV that allows you to pre-set the angle. Almost seems like cheating, but they work great now.
I also like using my vintage Stanley No. 80 Cabinet Scraper. Makes a really flat even surface, with a lot less effort and stress on your thumbs.
If you need to be convinced, take two like pieces of highly figure wood. Sand one and scrape the other. Then add tung oil or danish oil and see if you can see the difference in the depth. It made me a believer.
