Router bit for cutting box bottoms?

Within the last few months I saw a router bit advertised as ideal for cutting grooves for bottoms on finger-joint/dovetail boxes.

It was essentially a slot cutting bit with a number of different sized pilots (to control the depth of cut). You assemble the box with a clamp (no glue), and then run the bit around the inside of the box.

Then you cut a bottom, round the corners, and assemble everything with glue.

Anyone know who was selling this?

MLCS has slot cutter bits with bearings, you can change the bearings if you want. Not advertised as box bottom bits, but #7661 should do nicely (1/8" slot, 1/4" deep).

I'm almost certain it was Rockler, but they no longer carry it and have no info on it. I emailed them a few weeks ago and they weren't any help at all. If you find one please let me know.

Those are the right ones, but man are those pricey, and for 1/4" shanks!

Unfortunately I wanted to use these for smaller boxes w/ 1/4" thick side walls. The one you mention comes w/ a 3/4" bearing, and I suppose I could try to find a 1" bearing, but I don't see any at their web site.

Also, I wonder if I would be asking for trouble anyhow because the larger radius of these slot cutters may have trouble getting into the corners.

I thought they were high when I got them but after several projects, I'm not considering them too far out of line. I don't know enough abougt bit angles and such but they surely cut a smooth groove with no problems. I've tried that technique with regular slot cutters with varied success.

Thanks Mike, I ordered a set. I'm sure they will come in handy over the years.
