What are the benefits of a 8inch dado vs a 6inch dado stack?

I'm having a hard time understanding why people would buy an 8 inch stacked dado over a 6 inch?

Some people like to have Bigger Things.
Seriously dados are discussed at some length in the BT3 FAQ (see my sig line)

The ONLY reason I have an 8 inch dado is because at the time HD didn't carry the 6 inch size.

That's what I've been thinking. I figure dado's wouldn't be any deeper than what a 6 inch blade could handle.

I've always used 8" dado sets for the extra depth range. One of the first jobs I did with a dado was notching fence posts for a garden fence that needed that depth. since then I found the extra weight was helpful on my contractor saws because it provided some flywheel effect.
For most I suspect the 6" models will work fine.

Is there any chance since the outer diameter is larger and at the same motor speed, the 8" tips are going faster and therefore cut smoother?

interesting comment duff. i bought a 6" because rockler was selling the delta set for $30. i was interested in the 8" just because i could get the extra depth when needed.

              regards,

                There's a lot of factors...
linear speed or cuts per second (number of teeth times RPM)? same no. of teeth or more teeth on the bigger 8" blade? Quality of the sharpening and blade flatness probably have more to do with it.

I'm sure in some circles I could be lynched for it. Until I get a legitimate post count WAY up there, and can post an OU football helmet avitar, this will do.

I bought a Freud (508 I think) because they were cheaper than the same set in a 6" version and were in stock instead of special order. In comparison between those two in particular, at the time I believe the 8" had more teeth so in theory would last longer before sharpening. Both sets have 24 teeth on the outside blades now though and the 6" is a better match for the BT3.

Also, remember that a lot of smaller saws can fit and/or turn the significant increase in heft of a 8" dado blade set.

I have a Freud 8" set. Just happened to be what was on clearance at HD that day. Not the greatest set, but it works for now until I find a Forrest Dado King someday for $100.
