    Out with the old...

17 year old veteran - gave great service (gone to a good home).

    Kirby mods:
1" MDF base with 4 x 3/8" levelling feet, set of drawers, Link belts, top of rack screwed to the column, visible speed chart.

It's a real nickel and the chuck IS spinning @ 2,300RPM

    Trivia:
    • VERY quiet running.
    • 2" more between column and center of the chuck (8-1/2")
    • Beautifully precise chuck
    • Zero run-out (as far as I could detect)
    • Rectanguler OEM table with NO holes! Had to get creative to attach my table (see pic).
    • 3-3/8" quill travel - same as the old DP
    • 3/4HP same as the old one
    • MUCH (physically) larger motor
    • 12 speed - Old one 16 speed
    • Both made in China
    • The only thing missing is a light - I'll think of something...
Bottom line: I am a VERY happy WW'er

No doubt the new one comes with a dust magnet.

Rod's becoming like one of those guys who, upon retirement, seek out the trophy wife. In Rod's case, he's going through his tool "harem" and updrading to cuter models.

Notice the twin trash bins, swinging lids and plastic bag liners.

I use an old shopping bad hanging on a nail.

I love the fact that the DP's base is totally enclosed so dust can't get in all the crevices. Only our Rod.

That's very close to the truth - anything that may be "on it's last legs" - in this case, noisy bearings; I'm replacing while I'm still earning money.

However, there are no plans for another wife - AND THERE NEVER WILL BE...

Heck Rob, I'm sure you got your use out of her (the drill press, that is). Time to pass her on and get a lifetime keeper (like you did with your wife).

I'm curious, since the tool availability is a little different in the land of OZ. Are you going bench top or floor standing?

IF I ever replace my DP workhorse, it will be for something with a considerable quill travel. No less than 5". I'm looking into the Steel City DP with 6" travel. However, all that travel doesn't meat squat if there is a run out issue.

                  I'll be watching this thread.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Here's a preview. It will have some Kirby mods...
                    (Stretch for a full view)

"12 SPEED HEAVY DUTY PEDESTAL DRILL PRESS.
3/4hp motor, micro switch in top, 180mm (7") from post to chuck centre,
                    table 370 x 305mm with well for cutting oil, 13mm (1/2") keyless chuck. 85kg".

Some of you may remember I had a Radial drill press - not happy with it - undersize motor and too much flex in the radial arm - sold it some time ago. The idea was good but I only really needed the extra reach once in a year!

I was thinking you had a RADP and was wondering about it. Painted it green and everything if I recall.
Didn't recall hearing you traded it in -- I thought you were happy with it but I guess the newness wore off, eh?
