    Manchu 6" Jointer???

I've got a lead on a used 6" jointer at a decent price ($160 CDN / $130 USD) ... it sounds like it has an enclosed base and has only been stored for a year ... it was sellers father, and doesn't know much ... the only thing is the seller tells me the name on it is "Manchu"

Does anyone here know anything about a brand named "Manchu"? ... my fear is it's some obscure off-shore make or brand and finding replacement parts will be not an option ...

Google shows nothing that I can see ...

I'm going to look at it tomorrow ...

    Evening JS...

Never heard of it!.. Sounds like one that sneaked across the Pacific before they all came from there. ha.. ha...

I would be a little leary of replacement parts also. I sold an excellent condition 6" jointer to Madmac from this forum not long ago. If you are patient, something that sounds more like a household name will come along and slap you in the face. :>)

    Regards...

Well I went and looked at this mystery jointer and took the following photos:

I told the seller I'd let him know if I'm still interested, but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to pass on this ... seller is asking $160 CDN (claims that he saw one like this for $600 CDN at a local store ... was his fathers).

The jointer is missing blade guard, the stand only has front and back, no sides (looks like DC would be a royal pain) and the fence lever is missing.

The big turn off was that the fence seemed to vibrate on the bed as it is ONLY supported at the very right side (Infeed end) and seemed like as your went down the bed length the fence flexed more back & forth ... some minor rust on beds. The motor looked like it was still wrapped in some sort of plastic like wrap and had been on there a long time (since new?) ....

Name plate claims to be made in 1986. The stand had "Made in Taiwan" embossed on the top front edge (aren't they all made there)

Any thoughts ... (I'm looking for a "good" used 6" used jointer)

That looks to be very like the 6 or 7" HF jointer; same base (open on ends, splayed out front and back), same fence arrangement (attaches on right), goes for very little - the mainland Chinese have more or less taken over manufacture of the low cost tools.

          Thanks Loring ...

I had looked at Harbor Freight on line several times, but I guess because they aren't up here or available here, it didn't strike my memmory ...

I was a little disappointed at just how cheaply made this was and the amount of movement in the fence when at 90 degrees.
