    Is there a difference?

I am getting ready to purchase a 6" Jointer. The Grizzly G0452, and Ridged JP 0610 6" jointer at HD are the ones I am concidering. One HD has the gray one and the other has the new orange one. Other than the color is there a difference between the two? It will probably come down to the Grizzly 6 1/8" and the Ridged as there is only a difference in price of $1.00. The Grizzley is $1.00 more because of shipping where the Ridged I would have to pay Sales Tax on. Right now it figures out to $429 vs $428. I will be making the purchase on the 21st of the month when my SS check gets here. I am leaning toward the Grizzly because of the built in mobile base right now. But the Ridged would give instant gratification. Maybe one will go on sale for the Presidents Holiday on the 19Th. I was all set to buy one last summer but to take care of a very large Vet bill but now I will have some mad money again.

Don't know about the Griz but I think the gray Rigid is an older model while the orange one is the newest. One considerartion is warranty and service. I have seen good reviews on the Rigid. Saw a gray one on Ebay go for $280 yesterday so it appears that the Rigid holds its value. Again, don't know about the Griz.

The gray Ridgid has a lifetime warranty instead of the lifetime service aggreement. The gray versions are the same except color and were supposed to be closed out over a year ago. There were significant price reductions when they closed them out. Ask a manager to mark it down by 50% and see what happens.

I think either jointer will give you good results and good service.
As for the price, the old adage is "never pay list price".
I think the Gray Ridgid is the old model they discontinued over a year ago.
Maybe 2 years. Might be worth trying to bargain the store down a little on really old stock item. Ask the manager of the tool crib, no one less. Point out its been sitting there for 2 years. It never hurts to ask.

Regardless if you get anything off for the older gray one,
HD also has some promotions, such as a HD-sponsored visa or Master Card credit card with 10% off on your 1st purchase (which might be the jointer), you never have to use it again and can even cancel the account after you pay it off. And HD also has a mover's discount, you don't actually have to be moving, just thinking about it, or perhaps dreaming of it or even imagining it. I think you go to the www.homedepot.com website and register on the moving page. Someone used to say you could go thte post office and ask for a moving kit (e.g. some forms for change of address, and it would include coupons for HD and lowes, no oligations to the post office or anyone else).

I can't speak for the prices but I have the old gray one. Great 6" jointer. I got mine used in a trade. Thom has the new orange one and it worked great when I was up there last summer. Since the gray one is the older model I'd see if you can get a good price knockdown and if so go for it. Otherwise I'd get either the Orange "new" one or the Griz. Pat

Thanks guys, I will give it a try. They have 2 of the older gray ones at the HD closest to my house. The boxes are a little beat up from being on the floor, the plastic is dusty and dirty and torn a little. The boxes don't look bad enough so the contents are damaged. If I could get it for 200 or 250 I would be happy. I would rather order one than pay sales tax, that why the Grizzly. If I could get a real good price then I could afford to buy or build a mobile base. I am not a big fan of Ridged Orange, but not a fan of Chairman Mao Green either.( I knew he is dead but it is that green).

There may be a difference in the point of manufacture with the Ridgid's. The grey ones were made when Emerson was still overseeing the manufacture of the Ridgid line. It's now done by TTI, Ryobi's parent company.

All the machines you've mentioned should do a good job, but I think I'd pick a grey Ridgid over an orange one given a choice....any extra discount is just icing.

                Good luck!

I bought a grey one just befor the takeover. They had a fence design problem w. the lock and sent me a new one n/c back when Jake was there. I later had a bad motor bearing, seems that was an issue too, they could tell by the serial #, horrid noise, and had to argue w. the to replace the motor b/c TTI owned them then. They did send me a new one b/c the service ctr. is 1.5hrs each way!
Mine was a display. I think I paid $200. Good jointer, but I would want a 8" Grizz now.

The decision may be made this morning going to look at a used Grizzly G1182Z for $200, see newer post for details. (asking opinions on Jointer) The pictures look good.
