Well, I intended my original post to be somewhat humerous, but not entirely a joke. Boy, are you guys in a mood!
I haven't had a chance to test my own vac yet. As far as I can tell, only one person has posted their results. I spent the entire evening getting my cable modem working again. I'll do my Cheerio test in the morning.
I picked the Cheerio because it should provide a somewhat universal size to weight and shape ratio.
So, while the test isn't entirely scientific, I think it does have some value and would provide some useful information for people struggling with the question of whether a dust collector would vastly outperform a shop vac on a 2.25" port.
I shoulda picked something everyone already has around. As it was I had to pickup a box of Cheerios to use for the test.Comment

Okay, had a little time this morning and a working Internet connection. Picture below is how I tested. I use a Shop-Vac brand vac with HEPA filter, filter bags, with a mini separator and 3" network of piping to my four machines with four plastic blast gates.
I was able to pull approx. 1-3/4" in my horizontal pull test with the hose that normally connects to the table saw. When I bypassed my "network" with a 24" hose connected directly to the Shop-Vac, the distance increased by approx. 1/8". In both of these instances I was able to lift (vertical test) a Cheerio approx. 1".
The results for the 1" Porter Cable ROS hose (approx. 7-1/2' long) and the Fein 1-1/2" hose (maybe 13' long) did not vary whether they were directly connected to the Shop-Vac or used through the network: horizonal distance was approx. 1-1/4" with either of these two hoses. And lift (vertical test) for both was approx. 7/8".
I like testing with food. Next time I will dream up a test that uses M&M's, though.
It will be interesting to see if any users w/ dust collectors perform the same test. I expect radically better results w/ a dust collector, but I donno for sure.Comment

I'm going to hgo the shop vac route in the garage myself as I dont have the space or the $$ for a DC. I need to look into cyclone cans and or building one.Comment

HF DC test results
I tried the test this morning with my HF DC and standard bags. I didn't have any cheerios so I used a 1/4" stainless nut (figured I could adjust the results based on the difference in weight). At 1.365789543" the DC sucked up the nut, but unfortunately (as someone warned during this discussion), the nut went flying through the standard bag and now I have a broken windshield on my 2007 Porsche Carrera Turbo II and there's a 1/4" hole in my garage door.

When it warms up to above freezing I may test this on my cyclone. The only thing I know is that it moves too much air to be out there in sub 20 weather!Comment

You gotta admit, some of the results are pretty interesting. For example, it would seem that putting the 4" to 2.25" reducer at the end of the line works substantially better than having any length of 2.25" hose after the reducer. Someone had mentioned that having a length of 2.25" hose may help "focus" the air stream (and it may). But, it doesn't help pickup the Cheerio.Comment
