    mortiser as Drill press

I was sitting here looking at drill presses and I posted something about it before. Well it just dawned on me I could use my mortiser to drill pen blanks. It has a 5 inch stroke (double my drill press). Don't know why I didnt think to use that before. Its not variable speed so the bit will be going a lot faster than I use on my drill press.
And its not as easy to change the bit but I think I have solved my problem of not being able to drill all the way through a pen blank without sticking extra scraps under it after the hole if half through.

You'll have a >4" stroke, but most mortisers are 1750 or 3500 RPM so will be turning a bit fast, like you said.

Probably Can't - benchtop mortisers tend to use induction motors.!
(note the speeds of 3500 and 1750 RPM)
Router speed controls should only be used with universal motors like found in handdrills and routers.

Is 3500 RPMs considered fast for a drill press? That is the recommended range for my DP101 with small drill bits in wood.

yeah its a 1/2 hp induction motor. 1725RPM. Max Stroke 5". I never measured it to see if its a full 5 inches though. I don't need it to be. My DP is only comming up ~ 1/4" or so short.
