    Bummer!

I got the cutter head mounted on the Rockwell jointer last night. Took it over to Tractor Supply this morning and got a belt to fit. After I got home I cleaned up the pulley shaft and pulley on the motor, installed the belt, and tightened the motor bolts.

Decided to give the cutter head a final cleaning with a scotch brite pad before the tables are mounted and knives are in. Flipped the switch and held a pad against the cutter head. Worked like a charm and, no, there wasn't an injury involved but something didn't seem kosher. Turned it on and off while watching the cutter head and it dawned on me...The motor and, therefore, the cutter head is turning backwards.

Not a big problem, the Dayton motor can be wired to run either direction. Just a major PITA because the way the stand is made, I have to unhook the wiring from the switch, unbolt the motor from the bracket, and drop the motor mount plate out the bottom to get the motor out so I can change the wiring. About 1 1/2 - 2 hours work.

Certainly a PITA, but you're almost there Pappy!

You should be happy that it spun backwords or there could have been an injury.

Maybe I am not picturing this correctly, but instead of swapping the wires on the motor, couldn't you cut off and replace the plug end, and rewire that easier? Just seems like less work, although you should mark the colors for future redo's.

you mean you didn't run wood over it to see if it came out THICKER????

I'd make Murphy rewire that motor, it's his fault in the first place
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

That won't work with AC (alternating current) devices. The rewiring has to occur within the motor.

              I hope you're kidding.
Its AC motor, the polarity of the wire pairs is constantly changing and therefore the swapping the wires of the power cord won't make it run backwards.

What pappy was talking about is swapping the wiring for the starter circuit (which determines which way it will run) which is wired to the windings at the motor.

Came off a 12 yesterday, and the way I read it, he swapped the wires at the SWITCH, not the motor. So in between naps at the keyboard (still going to be a LONG week, may be going to 7 days a week for a bit) my brain was trying to come up with a simple solution (other then go to bed).
Off to work I go again.

                  jointer running backwards...bummer....

All Pappy has to do, once he gets to the motor is swap the two lead wires around that feed the field windings. That will reverse the direction of the motor so it will turn in the proper direction. A simple change. I've done that
many times on furnace fan motors and others like them. eezlock

It really is a simple fix. All the wires have brass number collars on them nad the motor plate has a diagram for wiring 110/220, CW or CCW.
