    Ryobi Drum Sander

Ryobi stopped making these right? There is a guy in the neighborhood that is selling his and it seems to be in great shape and his shop is in a heated basement. He was asking $450.00 for it. Is this a good price or is it too high? I should have brought my digital camera with me. If this is a little high, what price should I negotiate for? Anybody know?

I already bought his Ryobi Oscilating Spindle Sander along with 6 rockler T-Tracks, 30 star knobs, nuts, bolts, rockler screw stops, Gorilla brand new 14 OZ for $30.00

I also bought two hand planes from him for $10.00 and it looks like it is in good shape. Note: These are my first hand planes and have not used them before.

Is $450.00 correct or a misprint? If it isn't a misprint then I don't think it's a deal. $45.00 probably would be. Pat

No, $450.00 was not a mis-print, he was asking $450.00 for it.. How much were these brand new when Ryobi was still making them? I thought it was way too high of an asking price specially for a discontinued model.

Steel city has a new model that Rod, copied the free end support from and added to his. Looks like a good one. Rod has one , ask him the value.

I don't really know the prices offhand, but the ones from performax are like $800 and up, The Delta is over $1000 on Amazon. (just looked them up) I think the Ryobi was cheaper but still cost a lot. Maybe $600-something?

$450 is probably not a bad retail starting point but you should be able to talk him down considerably, considering the bargain prices you paid for the other stuff and that he's your neighbor.

            Thanks, Loring!!

Not really a neighbor because he lives like 5 mins away and another town. I just used the term neighborhood instead of neck of the woods

Talked to him more and he said that he will be willing to let it go for $385.00.. It is still a little high than I would like it to be or a little more than the funds available (funds that wife might let me spend) at this time but if somebody else wants it for this price, let me know and I can give you his contact info and maybe you have better bargaining skills than me.

That or I might wait til' Friday and see if I can negotiate it down some more. If I can get it down to $200.00 or $250.00 I might be able to work it out with me wife.

from what I hear they're very nice to have.
Since they're open on one side an 18" drum sander can do a 36" table top or door or other glue-up in two passes.

well I got the OSS new at HD for $50 from a tip here a while back. I think they were $100 new...So I guess if you did a lot better than that on the OSS from him maybe this will be equally good..

I got one of the last ones that Cummins had. Think I paid $150 for it but it was a demo and had some damage. They were around $600 new. Between $300 and 350 should be a fair price.

They were around $600 ~ $650 new without a stand, of course less when closed out. I suspect that they were probably dropped as a result of Ryobi's exclusive distribution with Home Depot. (HD can sell thousands of cheap cordless drills, etc. for every drum sander that they could move if they were to carry them. They are in business to turn over a lot of merchandise extremely rapidly, and their shelf space is too valuable to use for slow moving items. If HD didn't want them, Ryobi had no other place available to sell them here. This logic is probably now being applied to the BT3K discontinuance as well.)

I just acquired a like new Ryobi WDS from a seller on Backpages.com that was downsizing for $300, including a steel cart and a couple of rolls of sandpaper, which I felt was a more than fair price for it. It is essentially the same machine as the new Steel City drum sander seen at the link below,

                    http://www.utterguys.com/xcart/produ...cat=576&page=1,

but without the included stand, added drum support (I like Rod's version better!), and the main motor is 1HP (as are the older versions of the Performax 16/32). You should also adjust your offer for value added accessories, ie stand, mobile base, paper rolls, etc, accordingly.

I purchased a gently used WDS1600, which included the stand and 6 rolls of sandpaper for $385. I thought that was a reasonable price. I'll probably re-sell the stand, because it's too big for my diminishing space.

In the bargin alerts section I posted on a larger capacity unit from Sears for $399 (plus aweful shipping of over $100). I know a guy locally that is selling a Ryobi unit for $400. He has had it on Craigslist for a long time. I think the $250 range is right on.
