    Tall Rip Fence

I was working on a table top and need to make a flat lip 3/8 deep by 1 1/2. I thought the router table was the way to go but I mixed results. I think I should have used the table saw with something like this. 2 questions. Does the jig slide on the rip fence like a Tenoning jig? If I need to take off 3/8 inch - does the wood go between the jig and blade or does the blade cut from the inside?

Q1. That appears to just be a tall fence, which is what I would use for this operation.

Q2. Either way will work, as long as you make the appropriate allowance for the blade kerf. That said, I personally would put the face that will have the rabbet cut into it toward the fence, so that if the workpiece wanders away from the fence a little the workpiece will not be ruined (back off and make a second pass).

personally I would fix the hi fence to the rip fence so that everything is solid - check the high fence for perpendicularity - e.g. 90° to the table.

Larry's got a good point about blade to the inside. also, much less and you're talking about a buried blade or sacrificial rip fence. In fact, using a 3/8" dado for this would be OK and the dado edge could be kissing or slightly buried int he auxiliary fence making it a high and sacrificial fence.
That way you won't have to be too perfect about setting blade height correctly or get a unwanted groove.

There are some good descriptions of tall fences and how to build them in the articles section.

Thanks everyone for their ideas. I think my next investment should be a good dado blade.
          Thanks again,

I would suggest a Frued SD206 stacked Dado Set. It's a 6" Dado Set (recommended for the BT3X00 TS). You can find one in the Amazon tools section. Several of the guys here use that particular Dado Set and are quite pleased with the results.

An 8" Dado Set or a "wobble type" Dado blade is NOT recommended for the BT.
