Used JET Jointer

This past weekend, I saw a JET 6" Jointer at a garage sale, marked $450.00.
It had a cabinet-type stand, and the overall length of the infeed and outfeed tables was about 4 ft. It looked very lightly used, most likely needing only to have the surface rust polished off of the tables. I'd value the opinion of someone who's either used this machine or has done a lot of shopping lately as to whether or not the price was reasonable (I've found similar-appearing models online for $250-$650), and whether this particular model is worth having in a hobbyist shop. None of the tools the guy was peddling seemed to be attracting much interest, so if it's a good machine, I may go back and try to talk him down a bit. Thanks for your advice!

I have that same Jet jointer. I paid $399.00 for a new one in 1999. His price is probably what he paid for it. It is a good jointer, but I would look elsewhere for one. I believe you can buy a new Ridgid jointer for $349.00 and get a warranty with it. Also Grizzly has a new jointer as low as $329.00. HTH.

the closed stand 6" jointer is going for about $475-499 on Amazon.
you might print this out and bring it when you bargain.

$450 sounds a little high considering its used/no warranty
My guess a price of $300-375 might be right, depending upon how bad you want it and how convenient this one will be compared to buying a new one, if you choose to bargain.

There's no doubt it's fine machine.

I just got the October Wood Magazine in the mail. The Jet jointer, stock no. 708457K (The same one I have and probably the one in question), will be on sale starting September 1, 2006 and ends on December 31, 2006.

The sale info was on the cover wrap of the magazine, don't know if the protective cover wrap applies to the same magazine sold in the newstands.

Yes, the Jet is a good jointer and the sale price @$399. is much better than paying more for a used one. Jet has a 2 year warranty, used one nada.

The guys nailed it with it's too high. Regardless if it has hardly been used, it is Used and you can get a new one for same or less. See if he will come down to $300 or lowe and you have a good deal. You can askl more than you really want as you might just have someone out of touch pay it not knowing better. It's a good 6" and has the wheels I prefer as I change thicknesses a bunch with raw lumber in various hardnesses. I also do all my leg tapering and final width pass before glue up on one.

I purchased the Sunhill 6" several years ago as it came off the same assembly line in Taiwan as the Jet. Right down to the majority of cast numbers. The Jet is White and the Sunhill is blue. The Jet had the plastic dust port attached and I had to add it for $4 with the Hill. The Sunhill had cast iron extentions that increase the bed lenght to 56" and the Jet doesn't with around 48" give or take. I paid $319 + $95 shipping around 4 years ago and the Jet local was around $459 local with sales tax at that time.

BTW.. the York-Grizzly-Ridgid-Bridgewood are all good 6" machines. Good luck!
