    Modifying dust collection fittings

    These fittings are about .04" or 1/25" too small to accept a standard shop-vac connector. Anyone have a suggestion for a good way to modify one? I was thinking this would be a good application for a rabbeting bit in a router, like this:

    If only I knew of one that would cut .02" or 1/50".

    Any other ideas?

    Aren't those supposed to accept hose over the ends of them? And that's why the
    diameter is equal to the fittings you want to attach to them?

    Perhaps use a short piece of hose and two hose clamps to connect them to the other fittings you wish to use.

    If you are really desperate to use these with hose consider cutting a
    1/8th slot down the length of the barrel. When you compress the barrel to close the slot you will reduce circumference and hence the diameter by just about .040". You'll need some tape and or glue and some clamps to close the circumference. You can use a table saw with a standard kerf blade to slot the barrel down the length.

        Go to the plumbing area in your local Hardware store and you can pick up a pre-made connector like Loring spoke of. It has hose clamps on both ends.

          I too am having trouble picturing the issue. You say they are too small but then mention a rabbetting bit to presumably make them smaller.

          To make something work when it is a bit too small, I wrap some tape around it. To make something plastic a bit smaller, you can sand it. Both allow for pretty fine adjustment of size. Neither is a good idea unless the object is already pretty close to what you need.

            Okay, I guess a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm uploading two thousand words. ;-)

            The first picture shows a short hose w/ yellow end-fittings coming out of the back of my BT3K. This is a standard Shop-Vac "2.5-inch" hose (albeit very short). The yellow connectors measure 2.267" OD and 2.098" ID. The blast gates they are connected to are 2.478" OD and 2.292" ID. So the yellow fitting plugs into the blast gate just fine.

            The 2nd picture is a T-fitting. The ID of this T is approx. 2.227". So I can't just plug a Shop-Vac hose into it.

            So my thought (Jim) was to use a rebate bit to make the ID in the T a little larger to accomodate a Shop-Vac hose. But of course, this doesn't work because nobody makes a rebate bit that will do 1/50".

            Loring's idea of cutting and gluing back together a Shop-Vac fitting would work, but then it wouldn't work in other Shop-Vac accessories.

            I'm thinking the optimum setup would be to enlarge the ID of the T. Just gotta figure out how.

            Don't spend too much time on this, BTW, as I have already come up w/ a workable solution. But in the future, it would be nice to have the flexibility to connect Shop-Vac fittings to the T's and Ty's.
