Badnsaw Part - What's It for?

I'm unsure of the purpose for the pin that fits in the front of my bandsaw table and has to be removed in order to change the blade. The only reason it's even an issue is that I'm building a sled to cut tree parts into lumber and I'd like a runner under the sled to ride against the side of the table rather than in the miter slot.

What are the potential consequences if I leave the pin out while resawing tree limbs and tree trunk parts? Is the table apt to bend or warp? I know I'm going to need support under the sled all around the table because these tree parts are pretty large and pretty heavy.

That pin is exactly for what you mentioned, to keep the table flush since it is slotted for the blade. There is a potential the table may bend or warp if it is removed.

Thanks fellas. I can design around the pin. Measured yesterday and there's 1/4 inch clearance from the head of the pin to the top of the table.
