    My Grandpa had one of those

    Oh seeing a picture brings back good memories.

    I just noticed the picture that bmyers put up. As a kid I'd go to visit my grandfather and he had a drum sander almost exactly like that. It was a crude device and we found endless pleasure in adjusting it properly and shooting boards accross the shop with it. I never did find out if it was a tool worth inheriting as I never used it for it's intended purpose and am lucky I didn't loose any body parts over the experience but is was soo much fun.

        I have that set up at home - I use it for walking sticks. the drum sticks out over the bench though.

            It's far less ominous than it looks. very easy to control whatever you are sanding
