DP chuck came off

I've got the Tradesman 8080S 13" drill press. It's been working fine but yesterday, drilling a 1/2" hole in 1 inch pine the chuck came off.

The manual talks about being sure its clean and tapping it up onto the arbor. OK, I did that. Then you pull the press down until the slot is visible. OK, did that too. I can see the insides but can't tell if its the way its supposed to be or not. I'm guessing not since it looks just like it did before it came off.

They talk about lining things up but best I can tell you can't turn anything, its either in far enough or not.

What am I missing?

I don't have Trademan, and I am fairly new to drill presses. Just my thoughts - Are you sure that the chuck is tapped in place before pressing down and not the reverse? I would think the arbor is lower into place by pressing down.

The manual doesn't say to press it on. Its really not very clear....

What I do is clean both the chuck and spindle taper, then open the chuck all the way so you'll be pressing on the body of the chuck, not the jaws, then put the chuck in place and use the handle to press it down onto a piece of wood to seat it.

clean everything off with oven cleaner, and use a block of wood and a hammer to set the chuck.

OK, have tried each of these and can't see that its gone on any farther. Hopefully its set this time. Thanks guys!

with the spindle taper, when it bottoms out it's at the end.
It stays on by grace of the very fine fit which is sort of like a ground-glass stopper if you remember seeing those.

If you just press firmly or tap it or whatever it should stick there unless you have some dirt or grit which is why everyone told you to clean it real well.

OK, thanks. I did clean it well, hopefully its on for good now.
